I've been on so many different types of trips its almost impossible for me to choose my favorite overall place to travel. I have so many favorites for different reason. Yet, for now Palau it towards the very top of that list.
If you scuba dive, you have to go to Palau. If you don't, you should probably go there anyways.
I loved Palau because there are not very many tourists. It is nice, clean, and safe. It has a very strong community fill. There aren't any beggars. The roads are very well built, and the island has all the modern amenities we enjoy including good food. Most importantly, it has some of the best scenery and activities out of anywhere I've ever been. I think it is completely underrated which is probably why it is at the top of my list.
The main reason people go to Palau is to scuba dive. I don't enjoy scuba diving as much as I used to, but I decided I should still go. We filled our week in Palau going from activity to activity, beginning with a cave dive.
The dive was really great. You begin by entering into a chamber through an opening under water. You swim through a hole about 20 feet wide and 10 feet hight into a huge open chamber that is underwater still. Once in the chamber you are able to surface in an area that is about 15 feet by 15 feet wide, which has stalactites hanging down everywhere. There are two more chambers that you are able to swim further into, each time getting deeper and deeper into the cave. All three chambers have a small area which you are able to surface in, with the under water portion being much much larger. The chambers are each connected by areas about 10 feet wide by five feet high which you swim through. Once you enter into the first chamber it becomes pitch black, so we were using flashlights to see where we were going. On the way out everyone turned off the lights and just swam towards the entrance, which was small circle of light you could see in the distance.
If you ever get a chance to go to Palau, make sure to go. While you are there you have to scuba dive, or at least snorkel. If you scuba dive or even snorkel you are almost guaranteed to see sharks. It isn't a beach destination because the islands are all rock islands. Palau is made up of 100's of rock islands that are covered in green.
